Beth Amsbary is a theatre artist whose work is centered in an exploration of artistic language, political analysis, spiritual practice, and the search for good pie.
Beth writes and performs original work, telling stories of ordinary people who discover extraordinary truths. She also works as an educator, coach, songleader, and director, specializing in informal education and using creativity for community development and empowerment.
Beth was the Founding Artistic Director of Seattle Public Theater where she served from 1987 – 1995. Under her directorship Seattle Public Theater grew to nation-wide touring in its mission to produce theatre and educational programs which addressed issues of social justice, ecology, and the importance of barbershop quartets.
She now focuses on artistic residencies & the creation of solo performance work including Standing Ground, The Maiden and the Makita, Widening Rings of Being, The Priesthood of Plenty and Bones of the Building. Her pieces have been commissioned by the Frick Museum (Pittsburgh), appeared at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (Urbana, IL), toured across Canada, and café-toriums of the Northwest. They were selected as Artistic Picks by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Seattle Weekly and the Seattle Gay News. Residencies have included Museum of History and Industry (Seattle), University Congregational Church, (Seattle), and Unit One Living-Learning Center (University of Illinois).
Amsbary has worked on staff with Taproot Theatre Company, Seattle Mime Theatre, Nebraska Director’s Theatre, Theatre Bay Area, and as an “imbedded artist” at the Pacific Science Center. She holds an MFA from the University of Nebraska and completed a four year extension course in theology and ministry from the University of the South.
